If you want to play a nasty trick on your players, use different strengths.

From the 22nd September field return we can calculate Lee had ca. 55,000 effectives on or near the field. Some of those straggled away from their units, as so it wasn't quite that high.

Similarly, the 87,000 claimed for McClellan are his aggregate present when marching out of Washington. We have solid effective strengths for several corps, and they are ca. 63% of the AP, or 55,000.

There you have Antietam as a clash of two equal sized forces. It will be a surprise for the Federal player if he thinks he can steamroller Lee…

Ran Antietam years ago using VnB. It is a set that lets you play large battles to completion in an afternoon.
