Happy New Year everyone! I am wanting to purchase a unit of 12-15 strong Russian uhlans from Perry Bros (the new line of cavalry they just completed) for primary use in General de Brigade. I know I will buy a command pack and at least one pack of the uhlans charging with couched lances. Question is whether I should buy another pack of uhlans charging with couched lances? Or, whether the remaining 6 – 9 figures should be holding upright lances? Also, there are uhlan lancer flankers with carbines. Should I include any of these? Thank you for your thoughts on this. |

How odd that your earlier posting on this is now gone into the aether. My thought was that, if to be in two ranks, the front rank would appreciate their mates behind carrying lances upright for obvious reasons. For safety and convenience, many a lancer unit gave the second rank swords, but no spikey thing.
Carbines sound ideal for scouts and skirmishers, but, if you want 12-15 figures to look like a large unit, go for some uniformity in the two ranks.

The other thing to consider is storage. Lowered lances and even lowered muskets (particularly with bayonets) have long been banned from my collections due to them being a total pain inside boxes. Learnt this the hard way via Ancients – try storing a realistic looking pike phalanx. OK if you make special provision but generally the proverbial Pain in the … Box! |
