Brigade Games Miniatures had tended to stick to earlier Peninsula and indeed earlier Napoleonic Wars figures, but are now increasingly catering for those of us obsessed with a skirmish South of Brussels. Now released figures for Scots Greys, Household Cavalry and helmeted Heavy Dragoons. I am unable to copy the images, but may get some from Lon to post. I gather new figures in the French range too! (Yes, a Drum Major and a Fifer….both look superb and a pair of Vivandieres) Looks like Paul Hicks' work once more, (yes, I now see confirmed in the text!) so should be nicely anatomically modelled and crisply cast link |

Ooh! Very nice! BUT…$15 is currently £11.78 GBP, so £2.78 GBP more than the same pack of 3 from Perry Miniatures. I see they've gone for the same plumeless Scots Greys as the Perrys – so, for maybe the fifth time, I'll post this first hand account by Corporal John Dickson of the Union Brigade charge to TMP – ""I had lost the plume of my bearskin just as we went through the second infantry column; a shot had carried it away." Bizarrely, Paul Hicks has also made the same error as the Perry Scots Greys in showing them without their large gauntlets (but they have included them on the Household figs). My theory about this error is that it stems from the Osprey book on British Heavy Cav where, in order to show the cuff detail, the trooper is shown with his gauntlets off. Weird that, rather than do just a bit of research (or ask), Paul seems to have just copied the Perry sculpts. I can live without the plumes and gauntlets, I added my own to the Foundry and Perry figs using superglue/greenstuff but I'm not sure I can justify paying £2.78 GBP BEFORE the eye-watering international postage. Sorry! I'm a big fan! Honest! |

More superb figures from Mr Hicks. The vivandieres look especially good with one of them looking like she was inspired by a Courcelle print. As with Milord I am a great fan but sometimes put off by the price. With shipping over the water added it can be quite a cost. I wonder if there will ever be a European agent? |

I see two sergeants of British "light infantry"carrying "kurz gewehrs," or pikes. I thought light infantry sergeants would carry muskets, as did the rest of the fighting men. Am I wrong? GdeP |

No you are right. Whether he is from the Light Company of a Line Regt or from a true Light Regiment of Foot, no pike. (you will see that they are labelled as one of each) He could however be used as a sergeant of the Grenadier company of a line Regiment, which would explain the shoulder wings of a flank company, but just remember to paint the plume white if so. The gloves. Bryan Fosten in "The Union Brigade" says gauntlets for parade. But on the march and on campaign, instead gloves, but seems to suggest only for NCOs and Officers. Not quite clear. Much easier to add than remove also!
This range will always appeal more to our Cousins in the Lost Colonies, cost wise, and the commercial challenges to set up distribution across the pond have been well explained here before. The Pound/Euro/Dollar exchange rates are unlikely to change much in our favour I fear over the coming months. I think I'll get my order in quickly!

I think I had a similar conversation around 15 years ago (probably on this forum) about gauntlets, moustaches and oilskin covers for the Scots Greys when I first made them. Dighton does indeed show short gloves on all. He also shows sergeant Ewart uncovered while the men wear oil skins. Maybe this is artistic license to emphasize Ewart, but it could be that Officers and NCO's left their fur caps uncovered to mark them out to their men….it's not clear. I normally go a little further than an Osprey for research :-) Alan |

Hi Alan, I certainly didn't mean to suggest you were lacking in research! :) I just think it seems extremely unlikely that the thick, heavy leather gauntlets were reserved for parade and the dainty cotton white gloves were for wearing on campaign and facing the cuirassiers in pitched battle! |

Maybe but are you aware of James Howe's (1780-1836) painting of the Scots Greys in bivouac during the Waterloo campaign? It's an excellent painting with many interesting details including two small figures in the centre wearing short white gloves. |

is that painting which shows a brown horse as well? Interestingly the Scots Greys did sell quite a few brown and bay horses from 1814 to 1816, that makes me think, maybe a good idea to paint a quarter of the regiment in brown horses, now that would raise some eye browns. |

Wearing white cotton gloves in bivouac seems feasible/logical. If I were a Scots Grey I would definitely only want to be wearing those massive gauntlets when some heavy French cavalryman (wearing similarly heavy leather gauntlets) was slashing at me! |

Hello von, no he shows all the horses as greys. Me too Lord Hill, although the Light cavalry made do without either. There are two more mounted 'Greys' on the right of the picture in full marching order, one you can't tell as his hands are covered but the other who's left hand disappears behind the first trooper but his forearm has no gauntlet where you would expect to see it….. |

I used Howe's painting to make this Scots Grey conversion (chap on right) with the forage cap with zigzag piping
I can see a lot of plumes and uncovered bearskins in Howe's painting too! :) |

As it says on the home page, order $125 USD+ in our readi-ship minis (All releases across all ranges the last 3 years plus a majority of the Napoleonics range as we have been remolding all codes and only have about 15 codes remaining to do) and get 10% off those minis and for international customers $15 USD shipping. There are also discounts for 4+ packs of the same codes. Join our mailing list and follow us on Facebook or Twitter to keep informed of new releases, promotions and other news. As far as cost, we are competitive for the quality we provide. Alan and Michael make incredibly nice miniatures and just to be included in the conversation is an honor. As I have different expenses than Perry Miniatures and clearly a different volume of sales, there is no way to logically compare the two. If the UK ever figures out the Brexit issue that tanked the currency with a result that makes sense then things will go back to a normal range. In the meantime, we ship orders every business day to the UK, EU and AU/NZ so we must be doing something right. link |

Thanks for the pics Lon. Also appears now in "Discussion" thanks to Tango. Interesting above the gloves vs gauntlet. One figure on the right in the Scots Grey "Command" set has the latter. The rest are showing off their cuffs nicely, which I think will look better however accurate or not. Not sure if he is an NCO, who has borrowed a musket nonetheless? He is identical to the chap below but with the different handwear. The James Howe painting I had never seen before, must try to check it out further! Is that a diced headband? No, Fosten says zig zag indeed.
Bulk orders do work out much cheaper for postage. I checked out prices for a unit of 12 Household, 12 Heavy Dragoons and 12 Scots Grey last night.

My 24 figures have crossed the Atlantic and I am read to start on the Household Brigade (well, 12 Life Guards and 12 KDG anyway). Dose anyone know collar colours for 1st and 2nd Life Guards? My various sources disagree which was blue and which red.

It is a Sunday, it is mid winter. It is the ideal day to get started on these. The flash photo does not flatter them, as they are still bare metal. They do have very fine cast detail and should be a joy to paint. Decided the Life Guards horses needed full tails, swapped a standard bearer's hand from KDG to Life Guards (purely as I happened to have GMB flags for the latter and not the former!) bit of filing here and there, mostly horses' faces and many a pin to remove (but done with a thumbnail in a moment)

I think they will be. So far only the horses and the riders overalls are done though! No excuse, I am retired now and SHOULD have so much free time….and yet A photo of them undercoated, even in black as they are would have shown the detail far better. Anything but a flash on bare metal close up, but it is easiest.
