To be most effective, the Royal Navy should use that base to facilitate submarine operations. Still, the U.S. should be grateful for Britain's decision here. Mr Williamson is a fantasist and merely playing up for the cameras with his posturing. The US can expect little help from an impoverished and feeble British military in the foreseeable future. This announcement was was more about appealing to the government's base supporters who are in self delusion mode about harking back to the days of empire. |

Would love to see them announce returning to Hong Kong, but I expect that might be a toe over the line. Still, just for rhetorical purposes, it would be fun to see in print, for the swift reaction to follow…… |

We've probably given the contract for the new naval presence to a new company with no ships, no experience, and the T&Cs of a pizza delivery outfit, if the Brexit ferry contingency is anything to go by. |
