A Chinese warship that appears to be carrying a next-generation hypersonic rail gun has been spotted on social media, implying that China has become the first country in the world to develop the weapon…

No actual photo on Fox as linked, but other sources with an actual photo show a large box with a pipe-like object sticking out on the forecastle of an auxiliary ship – not a warship. Several navies could claim to deploy a 'rail gun' without demonstrating it actually in use.

Er…to develop one or deploy one? The US Navy released footage of testing the railgun they developed a couple of years ago.

bsrlee – in the middle of the linked article is a snapshot of a FB post showing two photos of a ship, purportedly with a railgun.

Bsrlee, the photos are right there. Did you read the article?

According to online sources the testbed is a Type 72 LST.

Yeah, an LST will have the space for support equipment. We will see if the Chinese show any pics of it firing at sea.

For now there is no proof that the Chinese have tested the gun on land or at sea. Did they extensively modify the ship for the required electrical power required?

Lion in the Stars05 Jan 2019 3:55 p.m. PST

John, the pics do show a large number of cargo containers on the deck of the LST, so I expect several are for power generation (and others are for the capacitors to feed the railgun).
