Was the Shako always black for line battalions or was some cover used ? I was trying to find evidence of shako covers and came up blank. Excuse my ignorance as I'm just starting in the period. Thanks

According to the Osprey MAA #76 Austrian Army of the Napoleonic Wars (1): Infantry a black waterproof cover could be worn over the shako. It seems to be shown an a plate in the Osprey Warrior #4 Austrian Grenadiers and Infantry 1788-1816 but if so it's very close fitting. A quick Google didn't turn up any illustrations but I know some manufacturers make them with shako covers.

All great info. I stumbled on Eagle figures and found Austrians in greatcoat. A good start for the new year

I've come across such covers only for the grenadier caps. The Hungarian fusilier is seen from the rear, leaving doubts.
