"First it was Syria, then came Afghanistan. Two days ago, President Trump shocked the foreign policy community by announcing the withdrawal of US troops from Syria, wrongly claiming the Islamic State has been defeated. Within the last 24 hours, reports have emerged that the US military will quickly pull nearly half of its forces from Afghanistan, and likely withdraw the rest by the end of 2019….." Main page link The taliban are who they are …. hard core Islamists with dreams of a caliphate in their part of their world. It is because of the Taliban's alliance with Al Qaeda that there will always be a U.S. presence in Afghanistan …. albeit not with the big foot print of the past. As for 2019 …. imho ….the war is going to escalate even further.

And what is the cost of "winning" the Afghan war? How many more lives must be lost or maimed, and how many more billions must be spent? The haters will always hate no matter what you do, |

The real question is if the lives, time and money spent in Afghanistan have really made a difference. I think the answer is no not really. That's why it's time to get out. Afghanistan has never really been a country. It is more like a collection of tribes that at times has what passes for a central government. We accomplished what we needed to do after two years. |

I think we could really make a difference with a few trillion more dollars, thousands more lives, and dozens more years. Oh wait. No, we couldn't. |
