I just finished reading the Kindle edition of Castle of Blood or The Fox Wife's Tale, A Tale of Old Nippon by fellow wargamer Conrad Kinch. It takes place in Japan shortly after Commodore Perry's "opening" of Japan to the Western world. It involves Captain (later Brevet Major) Robert Hood of the 2nd US Dragoons in an adventure to recover an ancient sword and rescue the heir to a Japanese family. With plenty of sword play and derring do on the part of Hood, I think that you will find it captivating.

P.S. A great thanks to Howard Whitehouse for recommending this book on a Colonial Gaming Facebook post.
