Epic games store is giving away Subnautica.
A fantastic survival sci fi game.

The game starts with your rather large space ship crashing on an alien planet.
All you got is your damaged life pod.
You're on what appears to be a mostly ocean planet.

Luckily for you, the life pod has a fabricator. That can make almost anything if you got the resources and planes.

First a local fish has a membrane that let's you make drinking water. And most fish on the planet is edible. And so the fabricator will make it easy to be fed and hydrated.

You start in shallow safe water, but you don't need to go far before danger lurks.
But picking up wreckage you get titanium. That let's you build simple tools like for, oxygen tanks, repare tool. And very importantly a scanner.

The scanner let's you scan debris, that gives you planes to make other things.
You can make a little underwater scouter.
The more complex stuff you make, more resources are needed and importantly rarer resources that are further and further away.

So it's nice you can make a little submarine called Seamoth.
It increases the range you can forage and scavenge by a lot.
In it's basic form only good down to 200 meters. But can be upgraded.

You can also make a underwater habitat.
With dozens of sections to add. You can make it enormous.
At first you only have solar cells. But you can get bio reactors, hydrothermal reactors and even nuklear reactors.

You can even make the Cyclops a big sub able to dive up to 1700 meters, big enough to have hydroponic to create food and water. And you can even dock the Seamoth or Prawn suit.

It's amazing just how much you can do.
And how fun it is to explore.

And there are plenty of mysteries to to find out.

Gunfreak is not exaggerating. It's an amazing game.

Rumor has it that Epic is going to be releasing other A class titles every few months or so in hopes of generating interest in their digital download platform. Subnautica was an awesome start.

Free download for Windows only (if I'm seeing this right).

My humble habitat.

And my trusty Seamoth.

There is a Mac version.

Thanks for the heads up. After playing for a little bit, I get the feeling my character is going to die, often.

Vista sp2 or later – pity I am still on 7…

Epic is supposedly going to be launching their own Steam-like client next year, so this is probably an effort to jump-start a customer base before that goes live.

If you prefer steam. It's like 10 bucks now as it's on sale. Well worth it.
Goragrad, 7 is newer than vista.

Oops – was thinking that was the codename for 8 – been a while since I worried upgrades.

Apparently it works rather well for Linux, using Wine – or if you prefer life a bit easier, use the script from Playonlinux

Thanks for the link. While it's not something I have the time for I forwarded it to some folks I thought might be interested.

What are the system requirements.

My PC is pretty old and won't run any modern games.
