…..War II battle with the Soviet Union

"The German sprint across Poland in September 1939 introduced the Nazi Blitzkrieg to the world, which then watched as Hitler's forces swept over Europe and bombarded Britain.

Farther north, another battle raged in the unprecedentedly cold winter of 1939-1940, as outnumbered Finnish forces took on the Soviet Union.

The two countries signed a nonaggression treaty in the early 1930s, but that did not allay Finnish concerns about its neighbor. Those fears were justified. The Soviet Union surged across the Karelian Isthmus on November 30, 1939…."

The Bofors ATG with the improvised snow camo is particularly interesting.

Looks like winter around here. (Although I think we got more guns.)

Great pictures. Wish some of the leading manufacturers would get into the period.

This one had me confused:

The Finnish troops often had to improvise and augment their snow gear with bed linens for camouflage. But they were effective: Thousands of Soviet troops, mostly dressed in auspicious and inadequate khaki uniforms, disappeared into the wilderness.

Do they mean "conspicuous"? Auspicious is not exactly the adjective I would pair with "disappearing in the wilderness"…

Some interesting photos there, though… this one shows a captured KhT-26, which definitely wasn't a common tank by any measure during the war:

"…Here are trenches that were dug in Helsinki…"

Actually air raid shelters in public parks

"Canadian volunteers who were fighting for Finland…"

I seems to have a recollection that foreign troops, excluding neighboring Swedes and some airmen, didn't make it to actual front.

"… seen with their reindeer on March 28, 1940…"

Please keep in mind that reindeer were only used in their native Lappland. Not the whole Finland. That is why we had horses in the front.

Thanks!.

So… any Canadian fought for Finland…
