…. Four Times Higher Today Than in 2001.

"There as many as 230,000 Sunni Islamic militants operating across almost 70 countries today, almost quadrupling the number that were active on Sept. 11, 2001, according to a new study by Washington, D.C., based Center for Strategic and International Studies. The study's findings were summarized in an article in Wednesday's New York Times:

The researchers used multiple sources, including the University of Maryland's global terrorism database and Jane's Terrorism and Insurgency Center, to determine a range of high and low estimates. Overall, the report said, the total number of fighters this year—100,000 to 230,000—is down about 5 percent from a peak in 2016, but still far beyond the ranks in 2001—37,000 to 66,000…."

I always wonder both who they count as a terrorist and how they count those people. Assuming these are smart people and their decisions are at least somewhat reasonable, then we can trust the trend, I suppose. So, a decline over the last two years, yay!

*This* guy was easy to spot, though.

The story in our family is that when one of our ancestors from Russia was asked at his US naturalization interview if he supported the overthrow of the government by force or violence, he enthusiastically answered, "both!"

Regarding the Scottish grandfather terrorist, I was in northern England last year, and I got the impression that they consider all Scots to be terrorists, so maybe it was more a Freudian slip than a computer error.

As to counting terrorists who are not applying for entry to the United States, I think we just send a Survey Monkey survey link to them by direct message in Facebook, YouTube, or LinkedIn.
