Having recently ordered a few things and being new to ordering from miniature companies I was surprised at how long it takes to get the product.

I've ordered a lot off ebay over the years, ordered from GW, incl FW too. Things often take around 2-3 weeks max to arrive whether from the North America or the EU – I'm in the southern hemisphere. More often they're here within 10 days or so.

So why does it take so long for things from non-GW game companies to arrive? The exception was Black Tree which took 8 days, but it took them 17 days to process the order for some reason. I ordered some things from Foundry at the end of October, still not here. Their site claims it can take up to six weeks! Are they sending by ship?

So are most of these places hobby businesses or what?

"non-GW companies" covers a lot of ground. I've had very good service from Irregular, for instance. But keep in mind GW and the Flames of War people probably have more full-time staff than the rest of the hobby combined. A lot of outfits have trouble when the sole (part time) employee has to put in more hours on his day job. Most of the rest are seriously handicapped if anyone is sick of on vacation.

And yes, some of them do send by ship, though that's seldom a problem if you do microscale or picoscale. Look for air mail postage rates.

Actually I should mention that Reaper had a quick turnaround but ironically I probably wont order from them again as their figures are much taller than the ones I have from other manufacturers.
