TIR seems to get a lot of votes in some polls, and I wonder if it has become a surrogate for "this is not the type of game I play." I suppose someone could categorize anything that is not their type of game as ridiculous, but I like to believe we are a more genteel crowd that that. (Hey! I can believe anything I want!)

Recommendation add another opt-out option to polls:

- Not my scale
- Not my genre
- Not my cup of tea (NMCOT)
- Nie mój cyrk, nie moje ma³py

… others?

Winston Smith04 Dec 2018 12:31 p.m. PST

I would vote against this.
"Ridiculous" is perfectly adequate. Particularly with the newly completed "most underrated movie soundtrack" Poll. None of the "winners" are underrated. Most are very well thought of.

Also, on of the main problems with TMP polls is the "ridiculous" fragmentation of answers. It dilutes any meaning the choices may add.

If you are motivated to answer the poll questions, "No Opinion/None of These" as well as "This is Ridiculous" should be dropped. They add nothing to the input of opinions the poll is supposed to be seeking.

Both of those options are childish. Or to put it another way if you have no opinion or are dismissive of the poll, then why are you even participating?

Winston Smith04 Dec 2018 1:44 p.m. PST

The only way to view the results is to post a vote on the poll.
I often post the double whammy of "no opinion" and " this is ridiculous".

Why are you trying to limit my vote?
Why do you insist on me voting the way you wish?

Again, the "most underrated soundtracks" poll is instructive. It was flawed from the get-go, because NONE OF THEM are underrated. So, I voted "none of these" and "ridiculous".
As a free born American, I cherish the vote, and if the poll is structured in such a way that I can vote for 4 choices and also "none of the above", I will do so.

Why are so many people determined to suppress the vote?

Then the fall-back choice should be "View Results" which you can check as a "looky-loo", to simply view the results. That way you can still have your "vote".

So, make a Poll Suggestion.
And when and if it ever comes to a vote, I will be sure to choose the "This is ridiculous" option.

I would vote against this.
"Ridiculous" is perfectly adequate.

I didn't say get rid of ridiculous. I just said there are other options that are relevant.

Why are you determined to suppress the vote? :)

If you are motivated to answer the poll questions, "No Opinion/None of These" as well as "This is Ridiculous" should be dropped.

I also think No Opinion and None of These are different things, as well. One is indifferent to the choices, but the other indicates disapproval of all.

Lets have a poll to demand that all polls have as many answers as needed to obscure any meaningful results.

Rogues104 Dec 2018 5:06 p.m. PST

I think David Letterman said it best: "We can poll the audience, and we know how painful that can be" pretty much sums up my opinion on most polls. Though I know many folks really like them, they are not my cup of tea.

Thresher0104 Dec 2018 5:37 p.m. PST

I normally don't drink tea though, and perhaps others don't either, so, does "they are not my cup of tea" have any true meaning for people like us?

warwell05 Dec 2018 3:27 a.m. PST

As Winston notes, you have to vote to see the results. There are times when I am interested in the answer but don't have an opinion myself. I HAVE to use No Opinion in that case. Hence it is not childish.

If TMP were to have a View Results, I wouldn't vote in the above scenario. I'm not optimistic about getting that fix, however.

so, does "they are not my cup of tea" have any true meaning for people like us?

If you know what it means well enough to ask that question, then it has enough meaning.

Lets have a poll to demand that all polls have as many answers as needed to obscure any meaningful results.

So you think conflating "no opinion" and "none of these" is meaningful?

I think there is significance in the difference amoung …

- I play this, but have no opinion
- I have no opinion because I don't have basis for an opinion
- I have a basis for an opinion, and don't like the options
- I actively think this isn't TMP poll material
