If you were going to make a game based on the TV show version of Pappy Boyington's famous squadron, would you use actual Zeroes, or T6 Texans painted to look like Zeroes?

Based on the show? Painted up T6's for sure.

Zeroes……

Those AT-6's were modified to look like Zeros. Tail surfaces, canopy, and wingtips were all changed (though the cowling was too short). It would be easier to modify a model of a Zero (by shortening the nose) than to make all the necessary modifications to a model of an AT-6.
While modeling aircraft performance, bear in mind that the AT-6 performance was such that the F4U's were being flown on the verge of stall to stay in the shot while filming dog fight scenes. But that depends on whether you want to game the show or the book on which it was based.

Actual Zeros for sure. Sounds like a lot of pointless work to mod the AT-6 to look like a Zero, when most people may not notice the difference, or just think it's a poorly molded actual Zero model anyway.

If you are planning on modifying AT-6s are you also going to use a mix of Corsairs? As I recall the show had a mix of F4U-1Ds and F4U4s.Best to stick with A6M3s (I think) and F4U-1ds. Although I think that VMF-214 may have had some Birdcage Corsairs early on.

If you're interested, DVG just recently released their "Corsair Leader" boardgame.
