I was just thinking…then this happened:

There was the GW space marine copyright fiasco, in which the rest of the world won, if I recall correctly.

Now there is/will be a US Space Force. This may well lead to the existence of real space marines, either officially or unofficially titled.

From that point the cheeky gits will be everywhere. Modern miniature catalouges will be full of them; sci Fi, up to whazoo (if not already).

Is GW getting this vibe? More than likely, yes.
Will they wish to protect "their" IP. Yes.
Have they done it before? Yes, AOS and all the new crazy names.
Will they do it again????

(Get to the point, please)

Will GW start dropping the space marine name in favour of the more enforceable Adeptus Astartes???

Thoughts?

Primaris Marines. They're on it.

They still fall under space marines.

However, you may be right in that they may go that way instead of the Adeptus Astartes. Plus having marine in the name helps with people adjusting.

I was going to mention like aelfs, however that seems to be generic, at least as a name. Also a computer system.

Nah, that was back when GW was the Evil Emprire ruled by the iron fist of the insecure control freak Darth (Tom) Kirby. GW is now all unicorns and fuzzy bunnies under the benevolent stewardship of Kevin Rountree. The balance is tipped in favor of the light side of The Force.

We know what Space Marines mean. So will the world fall apart if someone else uses the name. Elves, orks, halflings, etc. I'm not sure it's a bit deal, and I don't pay attention to the fancy (and annoying) name changes that GW has introduced to its fantasy line. I know an ork or elf when I see one, whether it's in space or in fantasy. Not an issue for me. They'll always be space marines.
