Interesting idea from the Mosin Rifle thread. If you could own only one rifle for all your needs, home defense, hunting, target shooting, what would it be?? (assuming you could legally own one where you live, you can't where I live lol) |

Can't here either, but I'd go for an AK-47; if assault rifles aren't allowed, a Barrett sniper rifle please! |

I own a Mosin- nice rifle. It would not be my one rifle choice. I'd pick the M1A Scout Recon, a modern version of the M14. |

Something in 7.62mm, but certainly a full powered rifle |
Lee494 | 22 Nov 2018 5:15 p.m. PST |
Interesting. I actually used an M14 in the service. IMHO the finest rifle ever built. So that would be my choice too. Cheers! |

Old school here Springfield 1903 |

I'd use the M1 Garand I have hanging on my wall :) |
Lucius | 22 Nov 2018 6:01 p.m. PST |
I'd pick a Mini-14. Shoots almost as well as my AR, but less obtrussive. |
79thPA | 22 Nov 2018 6:03 p.m. PST |
Assuming you are looking for WWII pieces, I'd take a Garand. |
Zinkala | 22 Nov 2018 6:23 p.m. PST |
I have 2 SMLEs and love them. The one is my go to rifle for anything bigger than a raccoon. Kind of big for home defense but would work in a pinch. |

No. 1 Lee- Enfield if ammunition supply wasn't a consideration-- perhaps one of the Ishapore Lee- Enfields in .308 as an alternative to the .303s. Otherwise, something chambered for .223-- Ruger Mini-14 or an AR. Maybe having second thoughts-- a friend had a Romanian built semi-auto AK that would group on a 2"x3" card @ 100 yds. Might choose that over a .223. |

M1 Garand with bayonet (don't underestimate the intimidation value of sharp stabby things up close… ;-) |

Based on the "has to be legal where you live" requirement I'd go with my Merkel Lützen drilling, two barrels of 12 gauge and one of 6.5 Swede covers all of the mentioned roles. If I had to chose one of my WW2 guns it would probably end up being the Swedish Mauser m/94 carbine, much handier indoors than the full size infantry rifle though the rifle is my favourite rifle for pure shooting joy. |
Pizzagrenadier | 22 Nov 2018 10:26 p.m. PST |
My M1 Carbine all the way. Love mine. Fits me perfectly, shoots great, takes 15 and 30 round mags, easy to take care of, accurate. I've fired a lot of WWII weapons both full auto and otherwise, and it's still a favorite. |

AR-15. Simple to maintain, light weight, low recoil and a healthy magazine capacity. What's not too love? |

FNC1A1 Canadian Version of the FN. 7.62, 20 round mag, could hit a man sized target at 350 yards 2 times out of 3 with iron sights. With a scope? |

L1a1 Self Loading Rifle. But for WW2, I'll have a Lee Enfield No. 4. If it was good enough for my Dad, it is good enough for me. |

AR 15 or for WWII era M-1 Garand |
14Bore | 23 Nov 2018 4:02 a.m. PST |
Foxweasel – got that covered, but think the 17 inch bayonet on it would be the better part of the weapon. |
Griefbringer | 23 Nov 2018 4:12 a.m. PST |
Considering the size of my apartment, I am not really convinced a rifle would be a good home defense weapon (nor do I really need one). So if I really had to pick a WWII rifle for that, it should be something small, handy and low energy – I think M1 carbine would be the handiest (presuming it qualifies as a rifle). Being semi-automatic and having large magazine capacity would also be useful. |
Gaz0045 | 23 Nov 2018 4:21 a.m. PST |
Staying with a WW2 limitation, then a Lee Enfield with bayonet of course. .303 with a long reaching sticker on the end because " they don't like it up'em"! |

We have three AK74 pattern rifles in our home. The 545x39 round offers nearly zero kick and I like my RedJacket KP. Our 15 year old son has a Arsenal and my husband has the Molot Vepr. |

7mm Mauser, a little slow but the most accurate of my WWII rifles. |
mysteron | 23 Nov 2018 6:56 a.m. PST |
a 0.50Cal Barrett Sniper Rifle would be my choice . |
Walking Sailor | 23 Nov 2018 9:04 a.m. PST |
1. Spetzgroupi that work at short ranges have found that the 7.62 has better terminal ballistics than the 5.45. 2. I like oiled walnut and blued steel. (Am I showing my age?) Thus a Mini-14/30. It's an updated M-1 Carbine. |
Patrick R | 23 Nov 2018 9:18 a.m. PST |
WWII : The obvious choice would be an M1 Garand as the most useful overall. Modern : FN SCAR |

My Tokarev SVT40 would be tough to beat, but I'm going to get a Howa Precision carbine in 6.5 Grendel. very light, excellent bolt and trigger, not too expensive, big enough bullet for me to feel comfortable hunting with it. Ammo supply may be a bit challenging, though. Choice after the Howa carbine would be one of those Troy Defense XM177E2s, almost exactly as used in Vietnam (only missing the full auto bits, and those aren't super-useful in most civilian situations). |
jdginaz | 23 Nov 2018 3:56 p.m. PST |
Probably a M14 but I would never pick just one weapon for the different jobs to many different requirements. For instance a shotgun is better for home defense, needs less precise aiming when you stressed r just woke up and usually wont pass through walls. For hunting in Arizona and I believe most states require semi-auto rifles t have a max. magazine capacity of 5 rounds s most military rifles aren't legal or need special magazines. |
Legion 4 | 23 Nov 2018 4:28 p.m. PST |
AR15/M16 … It is the weapon I'm most familiar with and I own an AR15. I have 20, 30 and even some "special" 40 rd. mags. Fortunately my state, Ohio does not have any magazine size restrictions. |

XM21, the ultimate version of the best long arm of the second half of the 20th century. Anything based on civilian models of the undependable plastic popgun has no place in my house. LT |
Ed Mohrmann | 25 Nov 2018 4:37 a.m. PST |
If sticking with WWII, a Garand with bayonet and options (sniper scope, GL, etc.) If choice – M14 |
Bismarck | 26 Nov 2018 10:54 a.m. PST |
At my age, for World War II I would have to choose the M1 carbine. Like Ed, if choice it would be my good old M14, that's if I was 20 years younger |
