"Favorite Space Fighter?" Topic

Do you have a favorite?

I was a (very) little kid when Return of the Jedi came out, so the X-Wing is on the short-list.

I really liked Babylon 5's Starfuries (more the space-only than the late-series atmosphere-capable Thunderbolt).

I also really liked the Hammerhead fighters from Space: Above and Beyond.

The Gunstar from Last Starfighter was also really cool.

But I'm going to have to come back and think about which one is my absolute favorite.

And how does a colonial viper compare with a Starfury or an X-wing in speed, maneuverability or firepower?

I promise to be interested in video fighters when they start BEING different and not just LOOKING different.

Not a promise I expect to have to make good on, by the way.

Well the x-win is a space spitfire so is very different from a star Fury, colonial viper, or x203 that follows Newtonian physics'.

The TIE is the ME109 of the Star Wars Universe.

The Viper is my all time favorite from childhood. I used to draw it on everything.

The X-Wing is my favorite as an adult.

I have a soft spot for the Y Wing.

Love the Star Fury (original, not the later revved up version).

Another vote for the Starfury. You just have to love a space fighter that actually looks (and flies) like it was designed to work IN SPACE.

All the above plus the Star wars A-wing.

In the day I also liked the X-wing but tired of it as the multiple movies wore me out.

My favorite is the GTF Myrmidon from Descent Freespace 2. link
Although apparently everyone else thinks it's the worst fighter in the game. (I love flying it, but then I never trusted that game's guided missiles, and usually just filled up on dumbfires and rake my targets with them.)

So here's something that actually might get votes:

You never played the old X-Wing versus TIE Fighter game, did you? The X-Wing was a beast (I'd argue for calling it a Typhoon or Corsair, able to take capital ships or fighters), but all the fighters flew differently and had different strengths.

I completely forgot about the VF1 Valkyries from Macross/Robotech in my short list, but I think I'm still going to leave them off. Too many cool fighters in that universe.

Overall, I think I'm going to have to go with the X-Wing as my favorite, very closely followed by the Starfury.

ooh, a toughie. A three way tie between the Thunderbolt from Babylon 5, the Thunderfighter from Buck Rogers and the original "dinnerplate" Cylon Raider

Very hard to pick one but if I can do 3 like other people, X wing, colonial viper and Buck Rogers fighter from the 70s. There's a lot of others that are barely out of first place, many already mentioned here.

My fav is the Macross U.N. Space Navy (Spacy) Strike/Super Valkyrie.

The winner in a poll – if Bill starts one – will be the X-Wing hands down with the classic Colonial Viper second.

Lots of good ones listed. I'll add the Mark IX Hawk from Space: 1999.

I love the Valkyrie, but I cheat by considering it a transformable mecha- not a star fighter.

I always liked the Hammerhead fighters from Space Above & Beyond.

Gotta be Viper MKIII, MKVI and Starfury for my Newtonian ones, rather partial to the Commonwealth Slipfighters and Y-Wings from the non-Newtonian bunch.

Viper Mk II from the new series then Starfury.

I always liked the Babylon 5 Thunderbolt…

I like the original Starfury okay, but I'm not a fan of the Starfury Thunderbolt. It looks like somebody took an X-wing and did a stretch distortion in a CGI app.

#1 comes down to a tie between the starfury and TIE.

X-Wings and Vipers

B-Wing is tops, hands down. Too bad it never saw combat onscreen.

Other than that, yeah Star Furies, original Viper from BSG.
