Hi guys, just interested to see if anyone can recommend any books on the first Sino-Japanese war?
I've had a go with Google, but haven't had much luck.
I'm particularly interested in military histories, or narratives of the war.
Thanks!

Thank you. I had. The book at the top is… 34 pages long. I had been hoping that TMP's collective knowledge might yield better results.

War of the Rising Sun and Tumbling Bear is the best single volume effort on this war, amazingly detailed for its size too.

Ian Hamilton also wrote a two volume effort on the war that was well received at the time.

War of the Rising Sun and Tumbling Bear is indeed a fantastic book, but has nothing to do,with the first Sino-Japanese War. The OP was asking about that war, not the Russo-Japanese War.

May I suggest archives.org?

The book tackles much more than the First Sino Japanese War but there is a solid treatment of the war in the early chapters. There are some nice photographs and photos from the period as well.

Sorry about that. I did not realise it was so short. Further down the page on Amazon – is this of interest? 428 pages.

Wargamorium – no problem. Yes I had a look at that: to be honest it does look like that one if the most comprehensive work on the subject in English. Sadly it seems as though it is (as the subtitle suggests) focused more on reporting and 'perception' than it is on the actual conduct of the war.
Seems to be more of an historiagraphical work, than a historical/military one.
China's Wars is a very solid book (literally and figuratively!) – I might end up having to stick with that

Spud: I have that second book that Wargamorium linked link

I will try to find it on my shelf and flip through it tonight to see if it has any military wargaming/history value.

You can also try AbeBooks link

Some of the books can be pricey but it is worth a look.

No worries, Andrew. I do the same thing.
