"En el marco de la Guerra del Pacifico, de 1879 entre Chile contra el Perú y Bolivia, tenemos que hacer una obligada mención a los sucesos ocurridos en Arica, desde el 8 de octubre de 1879 hasta el 7 de Junio de 1880.

Arica, antiguo puerto fundado en tiempos de la Colonia Española, siempre estuvo fortificado ya que era ahí donde, desde fines del siglo XVI, se embarcaba la plata proveniente de las ricas minas de Potosí (en la actual Bolivia). Si bien para el año 1879 las fortificaciones coloniales ya eran obsoletas y casi inexistentes, el puerto (entonces peruano) había conocido un nuevo período de auge por su cercanía a las zonas salitreras de Bolivia y el Perú. Apenas comenzó la guerra, Arica se fortificó con artillería traída de Lima y se convirtió en el centro de las operaciones militares peruanas y bolivianas…."
