Was this written by Wesley, or his mother?

Never understood the problem with him.

I guess if your a kid at the time of watching, he is either your hero, or your going to be jealous.

He was a bit older when I was first watching, then much younger. For me he was just another character in a great sci fi show. I guess the focus he got in the show could be distracting. But not enough to take it out on him only.

Other shows had similar characters, boxy in BSG, Dr z in 1980, Lucas in sea quest. Typically a younger character who may be a wiz at things. As they have a younger following as well as older, it's good for kids to have someone to relate to who can also play a part in the story.

Even Whil Wheaton thought the writers were defaulting too much to the 'Wesley saves the ship' crutch to resolve the episodes in the first season.

I thought the character was fine, but the writing was lazy in a lot of cases.

I like him…. sad he quit that way… he made a huge mistake… and he paid for it….

Wesley's character in ST:TNG had one purpose only, and that is to draw in more of the 12 to 16 female "Tiger Beat" Demo.

It's amazing what a beard and adding a few pounds can do to make you look like a completely different person, isn't it?

I had no problem with his character …

I didn't like his character, in the few episodes of TNG that I saw. Kind of like the kid in Battlestar (original) or that dog thing in Buck Rodgers, but he wasn't as bad.

Of course I am, Tango.

Why do you think Wesley's last name just so happens to be "Crusher"? Because he'll crush you like a puny man with his big muscles?

No, because with his charming boyish good looks, he will make the hearts of adolescent girls swoon and they will have a major "crush" on him. He still looked like Gordie in 'Stand By Me' at the time.

I never liked a kid on the bridge. Unless leadership positions are handed out to nobility he should have had to come up through the ranks to be in a command level. I think he should have been in some lab showing off his smarts in some technical field when called on.
But, I see the movie industry wants teenagers in space to get the age group to watch. Back in the day they put teenagers in westerns for the same reason.

The H Man15 Nov 2018 4:46 p.m. PST

With all that goes on in trek, it would be handy for all civilians living on board to have a good tour of the bridge and other parts. If normal crew are all zapped, at least the civilians may stand a chance of helping out.

Thresher0116 Nov 2018 1:18 p.m. PST

Not gonna happen.

Do cruise ship or warship captains permit civvies to drive, navigate, command their vessels?

Of course not, for good reason.

Might make a good episode though, of him attempting to conn the vessel, as he flies it through a red giant star, or into a black hole, ending the whole silly series with a real bang. Never liked Picard and his female conscience sidekick who is always telling him to be cautious.

Give me Kirk, "damn the photon torpedoes" any day!

The H Man17 Nov 2018 7:52 p.m. PST

I wouldn't believe a "to heck with it" captain is very realistic either, he would be out of the service day one.

The enterprise is not a cruise ship or a war ship. And the people on board are not tourists. The civilians are mostly family of the crew and experts on board. Besides which even cruise ships let guests "drive the ship".

A good captain would want everyone on board for extended periods to be capable of operating at least one system, especially when they out number the crew, and that crew has atendancy to die, disappear, be captured, so on each week.

Not sure the difference between one female concience and the male ones Kirk had. In fact I felt Beverly and Will also shared that role, just as Spock and bones before them.
