"Visions of the end of the world tend to extremes—the planet fatally fracked, flooded, hurricaned, nuke-cratered. No survivors, or maybe one or two survivors, dazed and dust-grimed, roaming a wasted landscape, eating canned beans, rotted squirrels, each other. But the truth is we might be in for a slow burn, apocalypse-wise. The "end of the world" entails not just the actual end, that last gasp of human breath, but all the agony leading up to it, too. How, though—without the fire-and-brimstone theatrics—will we know that the planet is truly terminal?

For this week's Giz Asks, we reached out to a number of experts—in paleobiology, ecology, atmospheric science, geoscience and more—to find out how we'll know when the world has actually ended. They provided a wide, if uniformly bleak, range of opinions. The end of the world might not mean drowned cities or whole continents aflame—but it probably won't mean anything pleasant, either…."

The first indication for most people will be when they can't get any signal for their electronic devices. Then the withdrawal begins…

For one the HISTORY channel is making a "documentary" about the End of the World.

But most of all, when people will actually start being 'nice' to each other. You KNOW its over!

The world is ending. Right now. You're just impatient.

Well it's better than guys rummaging thru junk piles, the dynamics of a pawn shop, modern marvels like how bread is made, vending machines, lawn & gardening tools, etc., etc. … evil grin

What about "The Red Green Show"?

No there's some high brow humor, Red will let us know when the word is coming to an end.

Penn and Teller did a B…S… show on the end of the world.
They were skeptical.

As for me, I have no plans to immanentize the Eschaton.

One question stills begs an answer.

If the world comes to an end, how will we know?

The only way you can know, you observe it from somewhere else. Most likely an outer planet location or the Alpha Centauri system (probably the only places with a good view, unless viewed remotely).

The real question is who is "we"?

von Schwartz01 Jan 2019 11:42 a.m. PST

How about viewing it from the veranda at "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe".

See how I cleverly worked that book plug in there?

Asteroid X05 Jan 2019 6:11 p.m. PST

Well, we all know (we know because we have been informed of this at one time or another but that is not that same as remembering or wanting to remember) "it will come like a thief in the night".

Lots of selectively chosen answers from gizmodo, though.
