….and Pop Culture Forever, Is Dead at 95

"Stan Lee, the public face of Marvel Comics and co-creator of iconic superheroes such as Spider-Man, Thor, and Black Panther, has passed away at age 95.

Although the cause of death has yet to be confirmed, TMZ, which first reported Lee's passing, has a brief statement from Lee's daughter Joan Celia Lee:

Born Stanley Lieber in 1922, Lee began his career in comics as a gofer/Guy Friday, thanks to his uncle Robbie Solomon. His roots at Marvel go back to 1939, when the company was still called Timely Comics. He worked his way up from small fill-in writing assignments to becoming an increasingly important figure, eventually becoming editor-in-chief in 1941. After Timely became Atlas and the WWII-era superhero fad cooled, Lee worked on romance, monster, and cowboy comics…."

In the century where our collective moral compass was subject to tremendous disruption he helped keep it from going completely out of whack. When we saw our selves in Peter Parker's bashfulness or the X-Men's alienation or Hulk's anger management lapses we also saw their determination to do what's right. We need the myths he gave us.

How many important creators can you name from the 18th century? In 2118 only a handful of the current "household names" will still be known, and one of them will be "Stan Lee".

But the real question was it because of what he did or how he was able to market it/himself? I think the greatest and originality of Marvel comics was the whole bullpen and not just the one guy who was able to squeeze out every $$$ he could from the group's effort.
