So….I'm a little confused.

Metal bases with magnetic sheets in a container….or…magnetic bases with sheet metal in a carry container.

Which setup is better, or is it just a matter of preference?

I do the former – steel bases are thinner and they won't curl at the corners.

Personal preference I suppose. Covering the container uses the greatest area, so cost might factor in. Is it cheaper to cover the container in metal or magnetic sheets? Also weight should be considered, metal sheet would be heavier than magnetic sheets, but not by much.

Just a personal preference.

On some figures I have magnetic tape on the base of the figure and metal sheet on the sabot bases or their box.

Some boxes have magnetic sheet which magnetic bases stick to anyway.

Some of my figures have magnets in their bases and magnets in their sabot bases. These stick to steel sheet in their boxes.

Preference.

I put magnetic strip on the figure bases and line the boxes with steel paper.

If you use metal tool boxes for transport and IKEA or Bisley metal drawer cabinets it is better to have magnetized bases.

Magnetic bases are more flexible as they can be used in metal containers as well as other containers lined with a metal sheet.

I use vinyl sheet impregnated with soft iron (better by far than the old steel paper) to line boxes & plastic trays but I also use metal drawer cabinets. Having magnetic bases means I can use either with the same basing system.

If you want really thin bases then steel is the only option above a certain size (probably about 30mm) but I don't want that so 2mm MDF backed with self-adhesive magnetic sheet suits pretty well all my needs.

Which is why I started manufacturing ready-made magnetised bases over 10 years ago.

At work, magnetic pick-up tools quickly became covered by metal filings and were cleared with high pressure air guns. Something I wouldn't do to a flocked base. So I never magnetized bases.
I used flat washers (fender washers have a smaller hole and slugs have none). Heavy items were strapped to pallets with half inch wide steel strapping, perfect for 6mm H&R infantry. Now they use plastic straps for most things.
Warning: as noted in a previous post stainless steel is non-magnetic. That's how you test it.

I have thousands of magnetic bases and often have metallic filings in the workshop but the two don't interact – why should they ? Who leaves completed troop bases where they are filing down ferrous materials ?

Believe me folks, that isn't a problem you will encounter if you use magnetic bases.

I buy metal cookie sheets from the dollar store. I line the underside of parts or all of my bases with magnetic sign material. Works fine.
