It resulted, in particular, in the downfall of the Dutch rule in South Africa and in the end to the Polish Noblemen's Commonwealth in Europe. In the face of external threats the majority of Poles and the inhabitants of the Cape chose to side with Napoleonic France. The defeat of Napoleon meant being left at the mercy of foreign forces.
