Insomnia and heartburn have allowed me to finish up my Fall-In AAR.

I think everyone is going to harp on condition of the Host (I know I did), but in spite of the site, my daughter and I had a great time.

All credit to the Convention staff who did a great job under dreadful circumstances. And--back to an old discussion--I have now seen a rehabed Host room--clean, neat and modernized. (But who on earth picked that carpeting?) Credit also to the Coffee Company as caterers.

Lest we forget:
No one reported AC/heating troubles, plumbing troubles, or electrical troubles. Furious as I am at the Host management for consistently over-promising and under-performing, they seem to have fixed all the systemic stuff and upgraded all the rooms. I have been told (rumor only) that the BOD is making no decision on CW2020 until they see what the place looks like at CW2019. This seems reasonable. Emotionally, it seems as though they're never going to get done. But rationally they must, and we don't have a long list of outstanding alternatives.

Oh. And the Longhorn Steakhouse next door is a very welcome improvement.

There was no heat in the Lampeter Room until late in the weekend. I saw a number of people playing games in winter coats, some with gloves and hats. It truly was that cold in there. There were two huge puddles in the middle of the floor that sat all weekend despite a number of requests to get them mopped up. Not sure how or why they're even permitted to have guests on that site. It's unacceptable on any level imaginable.

The con seemed to go well, all things considered. And despite the seeming lack of progress with the renovations, they certainly have people working on them. I ran into a worker at 10:00PM on Friday night in one of the corridors. :)

VE,

I really liked reading your AAR. Glad you two had a great time.

Don, does that include the open beer can sitting on top of the electrical wall box next to my table on Friday morning? laugh

Nice and accurate write-up. Best line:
"Awesome warning label + average wargamer = How is everyone at the con not blind?"

LoL

Don, I meant in the rooms people sleep in. Yeah, when you're rebuilding exterior walls there is going to be a draft in the adjacent rooms.

Which is why the Host management should get beaten up for telling us we had the Distlefink, and then tearing down the wall.

So my room was remodeled. But it had no TV, and I am assuming the outside door that led to what was formerly the pool area, was temporary. It was a good thing it was not particularly cold out as the temp door did not seal well and cold air came in all around it. I saw the puddles in the Lampeter too and wondered where they came from. I honestly can't imagine Cold Wars taking place at the Host in March.

Bowman,

Yes, it's all quite insufferable. 😜

Cardinal Ximenez12 Nov 2018 6:45 p.m. PST

RP,
Yep, gotcha. I'm just piling on because it's justified. There were a lot of 1-2 foot wide holes throughout the building with cold air blasting through. Just because "it's only a wargaming convention" doesn't mean we forego basic and reasonable expectations of accommodation.
