I just finished this book, and highly recommend it to anyone wanting to run a '30's era Pulp game or campaign. Essentially, it is a history of the Shanghai underworld in the 1930's, focusing particularly on two of the leading gangsters, Dapper Joe Farren and Lucky Jack Riley.

Wow, those must have been very interesting times for that part of the world.

Now all I can think of is the first part of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984). :)

And the films with American actress Anna Mae Wong and other great actors in that genre and time.

Years ago I read "Policing Shanghai 1927-1937" by Frederic Wakeman jr. Since that time Shanghai is for me a continuing feast for games. Which othere city has three different regions for police competence ? (French, International and Chinese). Which other city has a gangster boss as chief of detectives ? (And he was a gangster befóre he became chief, not a poliman going bad). Looking forward to read this book to, thank you for the tip !

Having been there a couple of times Shanghai is a very interesting place – and now, as then, the only God that gets worshiped is money!
