….compensation for WWII as Angela Merkel visits. "Ms Merkel visited Warsaw to meet with Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki for a series of discussions between the two governments. The talks come amid some tension between the two neighbouring states, with many in Poland still bitter about the wartime German occupation which saw the killing of millions of Polish citizens and massive material destruction.
Multiple cities were destroyed, including Warsaw, and there was widespread looting by the Nazis…." Main page link Amicalement Armand

How much are the Poles knocking off the bill for Silesia, Pommerania and half of East Prussia? Or do the Germans get them back if they pay in full? |
Pan Marek | 03 Nov 2018 7:43 a.m. PST |
Those territories were already paid for with the blood of 6 million Polish citizens. And you know, and the rest of us know, that Poland's borders were involuntarily shifted west by the Soviets, who took a slice of eastern Poland. |

Pan, I wasn't the one wanting to put a dollar value on Poland's suffering. But if the Polish government wants to do so, then it's reasonable to ask the value of what they've already received. Quite right about the Soviets, who killed and tyrannized as well as taking territory. But I haven't heard about the Polish government presenting Putin with a bill, even for Katyn. If we start rummaging around through history demanding cash settlements for ancestral wrongs, why stop at 1939? Can Germany collect for the wars of Louis XIV? Can Hungary bill Turkey for Mohacs? And would there be a Turkey to bill after the Greeks got paid off? Modern Germany can be annoying, certainly. But I think the Polish government needs to find a better way of expressing its frustration. |

Only a handful of people alive in Germany had anything to do with what happened to Poland. The others are not responsible for what was done. |

Robert- Actually, we agree on the silliness of expecting payment now for something that occurred over 70 years ago. But your initial post did not address it as you did in your second post. Hence, my crankiness. |

Merkel can just pretend Germany didn't have anything to do it the attack on Poland. Just as the current polish government wants to pretend Poland had nothing to do with the Holocaust. I sympathize with Poland, few other countries and people in Europe has suffered more. But the current government is just a huge bunch of assholes and any shenanigans they come up with can be ignored. |
