Want a paint rack for my new painting space. Which style do you like and why?

Schogun01 Nov 2018 2:13 p.m. PST

I have both. The lazy susan takes up too much space. I have stepped vertical racks (for Vallejo) attached to my wall.

Tom Reed01 Nov 2018 2:25 p.m. PST

I have both also, and I agree, the lazy Susan does take up more space.

Tommy2001 Nov 2018 2:32 p.m. PST

I built a stepped rack for Vallejo bottles by cutting 1x1's to the length of my workbench. Works great!

I never used a lazy susie type but have a rack from kraken skulls and am happy with them.

I find I can reach the paints on the lazy susans more easily than the stepped racks.
The lazy susans are tiered which helps to find stuff and increases the capacity.

I have a couple of small stepped racks I got at a garage sale that work pretty well.

leidang01 Nov 2018 3:10 p.m. PST

I have slide out trays in a vertical rack. So neither.

Moved from a lazy Susan to stepped

Easier to find what I need. No more hunting in the middle for the right bottle.

Stepped / Vertical for the small footprint.

Shelves in a 45 year old "secretary" desk have suited me just fine.

Ivan DBA01 Nov 2018 4:30 p.m. PST

Stepped.

@leidang "I have slide out trays in a vertical rack. So neither."

Did you make it or get it from somewhere? Do you have pcitures?

Glengarry501 Nov 2018 5:10 p.m. PST

As a bit of a paint hoarder I have one large (160) and three small hobby paint spinners (48 each) racks that work for me! I have the large on a side table and the smaller ones on the painting table.

I'm also still undecided myself. Thanks for all the posts guys.

I have both, like the stepped better.

The spinner works best for me.

Paint the cover of the bottle and then put the number on it.

All paints are arranged by number (I use mostly CeramCoat) so I can find what I want with one spin or by looking at their color chart and finding the number.

I use a desk drawer for my Vallejo paints and washes and my GW paints are in a set of plastic drawers.

The Beast Rampant01 Nov 2018 9:30 p.m. PST

Stepped. And yes, a lazy Susan would take of way too much space.

I went for maximum storage and compactness. Also added some racks to put all my tools, bases, stirring balls etc.

Thresher0102 Nov 2018 2:21 a.m. PST

Neat, Patrick, though adding in a new bottle in the middle of that array would be a daunting task, what with ALL the shifting, moving, replacing to do that.

Ragbones02 Nov 2018 6:42 a.m. PST

I use a Lexington cart on wheels that sits next to me at my painting table:

Knowing my luck if I had Patrick's setup I'd probably have a paint-a-lanche every time I bumped into the table.

I'm a rack guy. Looking at Patrick's setup, I'm glad I'm not the only one with natural light, overhead light, and three lamps. I can't paint without them.

TonicNH02 Nov 2018 12:18 p.m. PST

I use both – stepped racks for long term storage and a lazy suzan type on my painting desk for paints im currently working with plus those i use on a more or less constant basis

ced110604 Nov 2018 12:05 p.m. PST

A compartmentalized organizer works for me, although you can't see the paints as easily. Trays slide out, so I can fish through several different bottles. Inexpensive, stacks, and nothing to assemble. Trays accommodate different sizes of paints and other supplies.

Aegon…

I bought an adjustable rack that was for holding paper by a computer printer and then found plastic trays at the dollar store that fit in the slots. Nothing special but it allows me to move the trays around to get what I am using close to me and also allows for height adjustment for paint bottle height.

mindenbrush10 Nov 2018 11:34 a.m. PST

I have 6 racks from Warbases link and a single stepped rack for my Foundry paints

Nice Patrick, I have asked for some stepped racks for Xmas, didn't even think about a lazy Susanne, not sure it would fit on my desk, currently have paints all over my desk, very untidy, but I know where everything is.
