As of 2017, the Navy planned to upgrade the Virginia design and continue buying vessels of that class though the late 2040s, at least, while also retiring the converted Ohio cruise-missile submarines without a direct replacement starting in the mid-2020s….." Interesting! So, a new submarine class broadly comparable to the Seawolfs and an SSGN based off the Columbia-class Ohio-replacement. Not entirely surprised that the Columbia-class is getting some SSGN sisters, though. The Ohio SSGNs were done partly because the hulls still had 20-odd years left in them. Would have been a great shame to just turn them into razor blades. |
