"A drone attack on Russia's Hmeymim airbase in Syria in January this year was an elaborate multi-purpose Pentagon operation, Editor-in-Chief of National Defense journal Igor Korotchenko told TASS on Thursday. As Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin said at a plenary session of the Beijing Xiangshan Forum on security earlier on Thursday, the UAVs that attacked Russia's Hmeymim airbase in Syria were operated from a US Boeing Poseidon-8 reconnaissance plane…."

Sounds better to say the US did it, than primitive, stone-age era guerrillas, I suspect. Typical misinformation, like the USA is responsible for the failure and US pullout/cancellation of the INF Treaty, which the Russians have been cheating on for years, but ignore those facts, and look over here at this shiny object. |

Given the technical sophistication of the drones described, it seems unlikely that they originated from one of the anti-Assad rebel groups, even if backed by the Saudis or one of the Gulf states. |
