I'm looking for some rules for ACW naval actions. I'm hoping to do an action the size of Farragut running Forts Jackson and St. Philip, Memphis, and Mobile Bay in a few hours. Currently, I'm trying to decide between Iron and Fire by David Manley, and Sail and Steam Navies by David Brandon. Is there a completely different option worth looking into?

I love Sail & Steam Navies, but I don't think you're going to do the actions you want in a few hours with that rule set. Unless everyone involved knows the rule set well. If so, your only hinderance is folks talking/not paying attention.

I haven't heard much yet about Iron and Fire, so looking forward to other replies on this topic.

I've played both. Generally I think Iron and Fire is better for really big actions. Just a few ships, I'd go with Sail and Steam Navies.

Manley's latest is Dahlgren and Columbiad, a fast play set for ACW and South American naval wars – 1860s-1880s.

I'm very fond of Steam and Black Powder by Neil Stokes.

FWIW I play S&SN as well as my own rules, they are lovely :)

If I understand correctly, both I&F and S&SN are good, but I&F will be better for the larger actions?

Iron and fire is very good. I have run many convention games with it. I have had no problems with people picking it up with no previous experience.
