Was killed in a car bombing years later, IIRC. It appears in was not from US operatives, etc. But a rival faction. Of course if the US or Mossad did have anything to do with it, it's probably still classified ?
However years after that his son, following in his daddy's foot steps, also a terrorist. Was kill off too, I forget just how. Could have been another faction, Mossad or possibly the US working with the Mossad. Or maybe an airstrike ?
