True or false – to do justice to the period, Ancients rules need to be complicated.

dragon6 Supporting Member of TMP20 Oct 2018 5:05 p.m. PST

Serious sure. Complicated? No

79thPA Supporting Member of TMP20 Oct 2018 5:12 p.m. PST

False.

Northern Monkey20 Oct 2018 5:56 p.m. PST

Neither.

6mmACW20 Oct 2018 6:13 p.m. PST

This doesn't even make sense.

Uhm, "serious" and "complicated" are not synonyms. They're not even related terms. Indeed, one can have a complicated set of rules that is in no way serious, and one can have a serious set of rules that aren't complicated.

In any case, for either case, the answer to the original question is "no."

I have no idea what this question means.

Lucius21 Oct 2018 2:19 a.m. PST

They need to be, "fun".

langobard21 Oct 2018 2:23 a.m. PST

False.

HANS GRUBER21 Oct 2018 3:31 a.m. PST

False.

Our true understanding of ancient warfare isn't deep enough to require a complicated set of rules.

When in the history of civilization have humans not over complicated things? Ergo, ancient warfare must have been complicated. Out of which we get complicated rules to simulate it.

John Leahy Sponsoring Member of TMP21 Oct 2018 3:21 p.m. PST

Agreed. The question makes no sense. Why would an Ancients set need to be complicated?

Personal logo etotheipi Sponsoring Member of TMP21 Oct 2018 3:30 p.m. PST

Smaller numbers of people using more primitive weapons and spending a larger proportion of their time in transit vice combat … what could be more complex?

So, false, neither serious nor complicate.

khanscom21 Oct 2018 4:07 p.m. PST

False-- I don't consider DBABB or DBM to be complicated, but elegant. WRG 5th is complicated.

Old Contemptibles21 Oct 2018 5:36 p.m. PST

What does complicated have to do with serious?

False, an Ancient rules set can be both easy and serious.

Rich Bliss21 Oct 2018 6:35 p.m. PST

False

Narratio22 Oct 2018 6:33 a.m. PST

False, complication not required.

IUsedToBeSomeone22 Oct 2018 9:03 a.m. PST

Of course they do – otherwise you are just playing toy soldiers with little men with pointy sticks….

Cyrus the Great22 Oct 2018 3:54 p.m. PST

False.

coopman23 Oct 2018 4:01 p.m. PST

I've never played an ancients rules set that didn't seem serious about its subject.

Chariobaude30 Nov 2018 8:22 p.m. PST

Old Contemptibles01 Dec 2018 3:39 a.m. PST

So what are you asking? Serious or Complicated? They don't necessarily go together.

Patrick Sexton Supporting Member of TMP03 Dec 2018 2:15 p.m. PST

Doesn't have to either, just has to be good.

And 'good' is totally subjective.

Thanks,

Pat

Used to think so to make playing with model figures seem intellectual and adult.
Not anymore. Just need to play well while still being historical. A game rather than simulation.
