True or false – to do justice to the period, Ancients rules need to be complicated. |

Serious sure. Complicated? No |

This doesn't even make sense. |

Uhm, "serious" and "complicated" are not synonyms. They're not even related terms. Indeed, one can have a complicated set of rules that is in no way serious, and one can have a serious set of rules that aren't complicated. In any case, for either case, the answer to the original question is "no." |

I have no idea what this question means. |

False. Our true understanding of ancient warfare isn't deep enough to require a complicated set of rules. |

When in the history of civilization have humans not over complicated things? Ergo, ancient warfare must have been complicated. Out of which we get complicated rules to simulate it. |
John Leahy | 21 Oct 2018 3:21 p.m. PST |
Agreed. The question makes no sense. Why would an Ancients set need to be complicated? |
etotheipi | 21 Oct 2018 3:30 p.m. PST |
Smaller numbers of people using more primitive weapons and spending a larger proportion of their time in transit vice combat … what could be more complex? So, false, neither serious nor complicate. |
khanscom | 21 Oct 2018 4:07 p.m. PST |
False-- I don't consider DBABB or DBM to be complicated, but elegant. WRG 5th is complicated. |
Old Contemptibles | 21 Oct 2018 5:36 p.m. PST |
What does complicated have to do with serious? False, an Ancient rules set can be both easy and serious. |

Of course they do – otherwise you are just playing toy soldiers with little men with pointy sticks…. |

I've never played an ancients rules set that didn't seem serious about its subject. |

So what are you asking? Serious or Complicated? They don't necessarily go together. |
Patrick Sexton | 03 Dec 2018 2:15 p.m. PST |
Doesn't have to either, just has to be good. And 'good' is totally subjective. Thanks, Pat |

Used to think so to make playing with model figures seem intellectual and adult. Not anymore. Just need to play well while still being historical. A game rather than simulation. |
