Do you have an historical (not fantasy) Ancients army designed around an imaginary ancient kingdom or nation?

Mooseworks818 Oct 2018 10:58 p.m. PST

I tried four years ago with Jovians (Romans) and Auroks (Celts) and just couldn't keep it going. link
I've considered giving imaginary ancients another go but so far it's all on paper, so to speak. I was considering the following:

Narmer's Conquest of Egypt.
Alternate Earth settings like Mafristan and similar.

I recall a SYW blogger that had ancients tied to his LaceWars states.

Prince Rupert of the Rhine18 Oct 2018 11:44 p.m. PST

My two successor armies are basically imaginations. I came up with names and background for them and the filled their two armies with Successor type units that took my fancy. They now duel it out over some corner if Alexander's far flung empire trying to carve out their own little kingdoms.

No.

advocate19 Oct 2018 1:39 a.m. PST

No. Though I like Prince Rupert's idea.

Aethelflaeda was framed19 Oct 2018 2:35 a.m. PST

Yes, it's orcs and goblins used for DBA/ADLG. My Southrons too are a bunch of Turks, My Gondorians and Rohirren are Saxons, Normans and Byzantines,

Almost every tournament game of ancients is an imagi-nation battle. When Greeks are fighting Chinese and Romans' fighting crusader knights what else could it be?

warwell19 Oct 2018 2:36 a.m. PST

Yes.
Redgrave (barbarians) vs Silverfern Empire (late Romans)

no

altfritz19 Oct 2018 3:51 a.m. PST

Most of my stuff is done with imagi-nations in mind.

Florida Tory19 Oct 2018 4:09 a.m. PST

No.

I have a large army of Gauls that can serve for many tribes, so there is no need for an imagination.

Like Florida Tory said, you have enough barbarians, you don't need an Imaginations Army

Although I do have a small Amazon army so I guess the answer is Yes

langobard19 Oct 2018 4:36 a.m. PST

I was going to say 'no', but then like Frederick realized I have Amazons. So yes.

Lots of Hyborian Age forces, some of which are peopled (miniatured?) by actual Ancients.

For individual, heroic adventure-type games, these bridge into the swords and sorcery fantasy realm. But even for those, you don't have non-human races around every corner. But most of the Howard lineage Hyborian stuff, especially the large armies, various raiders, etc. is imaginations stuff.

Back in the day, before every publisher of rules also sold 'Army Lists', everyone's armies were effectively Imagination's.

The closest I've come is painting up Hittite allies from Wilusa. Their clothes ended up being a little more colorful that I had anticipated.

TheWhiteDog19 Oct 2018 7:37 a.m. PST

I use Victrix Macedonians and Greek Hoplites as the basis for one of my WHFB mercenary forces, but that's about it.

I have slowly been working on some Hyborean Age stuff, however that fits in to the equation.

Hyborean armies for HotT.

rmaker19 Oct 2018 11:20 a.m. PST

Yes, several.

williamb19 Oct 2018 12:14 p.m. PST

Yes. Sort of a late Imperial Roman/Early Byzantine with elephants. Opponents are barbarians and a civilized eastern empire (combined late Achaemenid to Sassanid Persian) with decent quality infantry.

I saw some Roman undead figures … don't have them but that would be a pretty neat army ! evil grin

The closest thing I have are Airfix HO scale Romans that I painted green a very long time ago, for reasons that I no longer remember, but probably related to D&D.

Narratio19 Oct 2018 8:25 p.m. PST

And another Hyborean holder, originally based up for WRG 4th Ed, now set up for HoTT.

Cyrus the Great19 Oct 2018 9:00 p.m. PST

No. I've toyed with the Hyborean Age, but never pulled the trigger.

Maxshadow20 Oct 2018 4:27 p.m. PST

I'm collecting 1/72 packs in anticipation of creating several Imagi-Nations. Well my first wargame book was Tony Baths so it had to happen eventually. :)

@Oberlines:

I used to believe the Romans used green uniforms, thanks to Asterix.

Never properly got into the imagi-nation thing, but the heraldry on most of my medieval knights is made up. Of course, with the limited palette and simple patterns of early heraldry, chances are that most designs actually were used by someone anyway.
