Was wondering if the Italian War Landsknechts figures could be used for Landsknechts fighting in the French Wars of Religion? I don't much about the evolution of Landsknecht costume during the 16th century so any assistance is much appreciated. |

I think the big difference is in the pants, the later Lansknechts wore pluderhosen which were baggy slashed pants. There is definitely a different look: link |

Unless you wish to be a stickler, I would think it would be OK.Early dress would show up on my table for the later war, because that's what I have. I doubt anybody would know the difference,or really have a problem if they were sans pluderhosen. |

I would get a few packs of Landsknechts in pluderhosen and mix them in for effect. |

There would also be other differences between the early and late 16th century, such as the style of body armour and headgear. On more practical side, the late 16th century Landsknechts featured a significantly higher proportion of firearms to pikes than the early ones. What size figures are you planning on using? The Assault Group released a range of late 16th century Landsknechts earlier this year, and they are also planning on releasing late 16th century Dutch figures. |

I game 28mm so TAG figures could work. I am thinking the 1560/70s as the focus on my interest. I was wondering if I could double up by Italian Wars Landsknechts for the French Wars of Religion. The pluderhosen seems to be a stumbling block. |

My 2p worth: I've seen so many War of Religion games where earlier versions were used that I'm sure that no one, but the most pedantic, would care a jot. Same goes for Gendarme types. However, if it's going to be your main period of interest, buy the right period figures, for your own mental health reasons. |

However, if it's going to be your main period of interest, buy the right period figures, for your own mental health reasons. Considering that the selection of later 16th century figures on the market tends to be a bit limited, I would certainly recommend buying them in those cases where they are easily available (like the TAG ones). There will probably be more than enough other troop types where you will need to substitute with something else. Also, buying later 16th century figures is probably the best way to encourage manufacturers to make more of them. |

In short: they DO look different. Most people would not recognize the difference, and most of those who do would not care – but the difference is at least as obvious as that between a WWI and WW2 kit. In detail breastplates, trousers, shirts and hats differ decisively. I recommend TAG miniatures if you go for the era. |

The OG later landsknecht in their Wars of Religion range look very good. The poses are very war-game friendly (45-60 degree pike slant) and, notwithstanding the need to drill out hands, the pikes will NEVER pop out. I have hundreds of their Italian Wars Landsknecht and Swiss and they have been excellent. For this mid-to-late 16th century period, there are relatively few options. Chris |
