As a wargamer, what is the historical period or fantasy/sci-fi genre which you have most recently "gotten into"?

Winston Smith16 Oct 2018 8:45 p.m. PST

I've been selling off periods.

But if you want to consider a new army in an established period, I'm doing Flames of War Hungarians. The cool thing is that I can proxy British or Soviets until I get them done. (Brown uniform , green helmet…)

KSmyth16 Oct 2018 9:28 p.m. PST

I've finally started painting the excellent 1898 Miniaturas range. The project is the Philippine War. Some holes in the range, unfortunately. No cavalry. No U.S Volunteers (not armed with they Krag rifles. Genuinely a pleasure to paint. Blog post about my first effort painting the rayadillo here:

WW2, the Cossacks in German service were just too good to pass on.

before that, it was AVBCW some 8-9 years ago.

I am not counting frostgrave, as I was already into Fantasy, and Fantasy skirmish (Mordheim).

As others have said, if anything I am ditching projects to focus my time and money on what I really have resources for.

Pirates, natives & settlers in and around the Caribbean in 10mm. Not a 'serious' project but a 'fun' one.

Dragon Gunner17 Oct 2018 3:08 a.m. PST

I have ADD when it comes to collecting and starting projects only to lose interest or decide they were unrealistic anyway. I should be collecting and playing what I see others desire to game…

Selling my Epic 40K and 15mm Scifi.

I just started collecting the following…

1. Ogre Miniatures (it might be a year or more to get a game in the at the rate the kickstarters are arriving but that is ok…)

2. I have 40K / Necromunda miniatures but I don't like GW rule sets. I entertained the idea of parting with it all AGAIN… Combat Zone is looking good I like scifi skirmish but hate clunky rules sets.

3. TSATF colonials and I am considering VSF as a replacement to scifi.

This is what is popular in the region currently, Xwing, 40K, Age of Sigmar, War Machine, Hordes and Infinity.

Newest I guess would be the Fireforge Teutonic Knights I just bought, although I have been painting medieval knights for more than 20 years – just none from central/eastern Europe

The new Adeptus Titanicus. Got the starter set, haven't assembled anything quite yet, just reading the rules and about to break out the glue.

Lascaris17 Oct 2018 5:43 a.m. PST

WW1 in Mesopotamia although that's on hold as I'm back into Napoleonics in a big way.

Gunfreak Supporting Member of TMP17 Oct 2018 5:54 a.m. PST

Latest is a 4th attempt at WW2.
But totally new is early 100 year's war. But that's almost two years ago I think.

Ragbones17 Oct 2018 6:03 a.m. PST

The Tonkin Campaigns, part of the Sino-French War, 1883-1887. Like Winston, I'm selling off periods, downsizing my collections. Since retiring I haven't started any wholly new periods but Tonkin is just a small offshoot using my Boxer Rebellion armies as the foundation. I don't need much to dabble in it.

New to me is WW2 armor with the TANKS game from Gale Force 9, though it was an impulse buy and at most I might look for few more tanks to match the cards that came with the set. I probably won't even bother to paint them, as WW2 simply isn't of high interest to me (though they had me at "Tanks").

Other than that, I'm still just doing the same stuff: Wings of War/Glory, Warmaster, X-Wing, Ogre/GEV (which is a big return genre for me with the recent plastics Kickstarter campaigns). I doubt I'll really look for anything new beyond expanding these.

2mm using The Portable Wargame. I built Napoleonics, ACW and WWII, and now I can visit the grandkids and carry everything I need for a game in a laptop carrier. (They're not old enough to play yet. The will mean plastics.)

Just now venturing into 6mm WW2. Bought the awesome Timecast Stalingrad grain elevator and need to assemble the appropriate Russian and German forces.

Currently considering AWI in 1/72 (B&B miniatures and some Irregular). It's very tempting – and I have Christopher Ward's books on the way. I suspect I might be doomed to attempt it.

rmaker@ If you see this: Have you ordered from Historifigs lately, and if so, were you happy with the experience? I've long been tempted by those Hawaiians, but am never quite sure if the seller is a going concern.

The newest interest that lead to getting new figs would be my lizards for Dragon Rampant/Space 1889 Venusians.

The newest revisited project is MoonGrunts I have had the figures for several years and just now getting around to assembling them.

6mm sci-f and I'm stick'n to it ! Mostly based on GW Epic, but I very much cherry pick. As I see and think fit my paradigm of Sci-fi. Hence much of GW Epic and even 40K I see as drivel ! evil grin
