Writing in Slingshot 318, Chris Hahn mentions that despite the FAQ, the updated amendments and clarifications, and the online forum, he still struggles with the procedures in L'Art de la Guerre (especially conforming) and finds himself scratching his head over modifiers. Do you similarly struggle over the rules in ADLG? |

Yes, I gave up and sold my copy. Too much style over substance for me. |

I'm a bit surprised. I've played a fair bit of ADLG and find it pretty straight forward (I did learn to wargame with WRG 7th though so most games seem reasonably straightforward in comparison). I find ADLG a bit dull (a common issue in the various DB.. systems) and lacking in visual appeal but not complicated. Martin |

I've been playing various ancient rules systems since 1973 and ADLG are definitely my favorite. I don't enter competitions so this opinion is based on simulation gaming of historical battles or historical enemies. Well thought out, well written and well presented. Great rules. |

ADLG is very popular in my region. By far the most played. So for me to continue in Ancients gaming I had to get into it. When I first started and did not know the rules, I can say yes, it seemed complicated.. But, after playing a number of games of it, I can say now that I do not see it as complicated at all. Yes, it does have more rules to it than DBA and Triumph, but, once you learn it, it goes very smoothly. I can say that about every ancient rules set I have tried. Complicated and unfamiliar at first, but gets easier and understand it better once I play more games. So in all I disagree with opinion in Slingshot 318. A 200 point game of about 20 to 24 units on a side usually ends in about two hours. Quick reference sheet very helpful, rule book look ups very limited after you get a few games behind you. |

I got a copy but after looking over the 70+ pages of rules and reference chart I haven't tried it yet. |

Easy to game imho, take a few more attempts with another experienced player. |

It does help having someone to teach you the rules, but I don't have a problem with the rules. I will admit that if I don't play any rules in a few months I might forget certain rules or what you can/can't do in different times. But I think that is mainly due to age and playing too many other games. We have a small group of players in my area that play it once in a while and I do play them at the HMGS cons. |

I suspect that at least some of the gamers who try any given ruleset will struggle with getting to grips with some elements of it. It's always been so, nothing to do with any given set. In other news, some gamers prefer undercoating in black. And others prefer white. And dont get me started on whether 15mm scale AFVs should be based or not… |

Had no trouble with ADLG. Same can't said for another set of initals, despite 3 editions and 20 odd year passing I still never made sense of them :-) |
