There are a number of similar roller and stamp devices available as free 3D printer files.

And whoever made the prototypes in the photos hasn't been out in the real world much – flesh pink?

I'm familiar with Green Stuff World rolling pins, though haven't used them myself. Individually, they're more expensive, but a six-pack is less than this KS: link

Can't wait to get a 3D printer myself, although I have plenty of mini's to paint already… :P
