I just saw an air national guard ad on a website (I couldn't find it on youtube) where they clearly show an apache helicopter doing a fly by. To my knowledge the Air National Guard doesn't use Apache helicopters. Anyone know why they'd feature an Apache in a commercial?

Seems weird to me.

(And yes, it was Air National Guard, not Army, as it closed on their logo).

Wikipedia article on the Apache says Guard units have them. In fact, the Army was planning on relieving Guard units of their Apaches, to use them as heavy scouts replacing the Kiowa, which the Guard disagreed with.

Damon.

Because Apaches look bad-###. And if you are doing a recruiting commercial for the guard, you want something bad-### in it.

Air Guard- not Army Guard. Yes the Army Guard has them, but Air Guard?

No Apaches in the Air Guard but the Army Guard still has a few although as Garand said, most have been replaced with Blackhawks allowing the regular CAB's to make up for pulling all of the Kiowas. As also noted, the Guard was not happy but settled for retaining a few AH-64D formations.

The Airforce has no mission or OOB that involves helicopter gunships outside of SAR and for that they use Pavehawks and Ospreys. They keep trying to get rid of the A-10 as it is.

Another reason the Apaches were move from the National Guard to active component was a utility helicopter, like the Blackhawk, is a whole lot more useful to a state governor than an attack helicopter.

Around here, the Air Guard flies A10s, the National Guard flies Apaches and Blackhawks.

Maybe the video shows a joint exercise with army national guard?

And @Mckrok: The sensors on an Apache make it pretty useful for Search and rescue. Well, the search part, anyway. Last time someone got lost in the mountains here, they had Apaches doing the looking while the Blackhawks orbited around.
