I need some help. I have little experience of WW2 Wargaming My grandfather was a flight sergeant in the RAF during the Second World War. During the Battle of Britain, he trained as an anti aircraft gunner. It's something I would like to make a model of, and from stories my mother has told me I suspect it would have been a bofors gun. He was stationed at an airfield in the west of London What I am most interested in finding out what uniform the RAF gunners would have worn and what colours. Most bofors models I have seen come with British Artillery crew and I'm up for doing a conversion if necessary. Any help would be appreciated |

RAF 'other ranks' wore regular battle dress and side cap or helmet, just in RAF blue – a mid to dark blue/grey. So a regular Bofors and crew painted in RAF blue. Pretty sure the Bofors would have been 'bronze green' or an olive green liberated from stores for painting aircraft. |

Just had a look in my book, it says War Service Dress (blue battle dress) wasn't introduced for all until 43, before that it was issued to aircrew only from the end of 40. RAF ground trades would have worn normal Service Dress (jacket with 4 outer pockets, cloth belt above bottom pockets) during the Battle of Britain. |

And War Service Dress was eventually phased out in favor of plain battle dress, so the real question is what year you want to represent (the Bofors changes somewhat through the war also). |

This is true Jeff, but War Service Dress was only phased out for certain trades, it carried on being worn by many while khaki BD was worn by others. It's a very complex subject, you can't go far wrong with whatever you decide. |

Thanks for the additional information. I want the model to reflect the role he played in the Battle of Britain, so that I will be able to give that to my grandsons. So 1940. So I am thinking then it would be normal raf service dress, perhaps side cap and/or helmet (I'm thinking the setting for it would be a dugout) |

Sounds good, service dress, respirator case and blue/grey helmet. |
