Did these orderlies wear a standard uniform? Also I,ve heard they wore an armband, could someone provide a description or photo of this? What sort of emblem, standard was flown over Confederate field Hospitals for identification purposes? What ranks were surgeons, doctors? Thanks in advance for your help.

Surgeons were majors, and Assistant Surgeons were captain or lieutenants.

As opposed to the Union, there were no specific uniforms for the Confederates – here is a quote from Civil War Rx

"Confederate hospital stewards' uniforms and insignia were not officially regulated, but one surgeon recalled that on the uniform many wore, the chevrons on the coat sleeves and the stripe down the trousers very similar to those worn by an orderly or first sergeant, but were black in color."

CSA Assistant Surgeons performed much in the way of combat medics or paramedics, venturing much closer to the edge of battle, providing first aid, some wound stabilization, minor surgery with a pocket instrument kit, and a bit of triage.
The rate of casualties for Assistant Surgeons was much higher for the South, since Federal procedures had the medical orderlies attend to bringing the wounded back to a rear-echelon casualty station where they could be sorted and treated by the Union Surgeons and Asst. Surgeons.
