It isn't very well sourced which raises questions on the research that went into the paper.

It uses very few (if any) primary sources, but it is a Master's Thesis, not something intended for a Doctorate, a dissertation. He would have had very limited access to original French sources and may not even have the command of the language.

The end result presents nothing original, but it is rare tome that does so, 200 years on.

It is far better written than most, similar, work that I have seen in my own field of study.

I don't agree that the author would not have had access to original French sources, but he may not have had command of the French language. French source material certainly was available when the thesis was written, and much of it in English.

And it doesn't matter that it is a master's thesis and not a doctoral dissertation. When I was taking my masters in military history we were not allowed to use Ospreys, even though some of them were excellent and the research still had to be done properly with credible source material.

How fortunate that a Masters Thesis does not have to be defended, face to face.

If he had had to do so against an expert, in a dissertation for a PhD, he would have prayed not to meet you!

Seriously though, of course you are right. But a Masters Thesis, in any US university, will not fund you to spend months in Paris working though the records (if only….)

Let me also say that you and I might be from an earlier generation of academia. What I see now may not frighten the enemy but it etc……….
