I've been looking at the renders for this forthcoming set on the Victix FB page, and despite the extravagant detail on these figures making them a very attractive prospect it strikes me that there's something not quite right about the helmet shapes: they seem too tall and not conical enough; in some cases almost bulbous, in fact. Have a look at the latest releases from Gripping Beast on the Hobby News page for my idea of accurately proportioned helmets (I have no connection to that company other than being an occasional customer, BTW). What's your impression? |

I would look but it's too much trouble trying to find out what the webpages are. |

The Victrix Viking helmets may be a tiny bit conical shaped. It's not enough to bother me. The detail on these minis looks amazing, but painting all of that detail is a bit daunting to me. I definitely don't like the ones that look like they have Christmas wreaths on their heads. I wonder when in 2019 they will be released? I already have a bunch of plastic GB Vikings waiting to be painted up. I will probably stick with these and paint them up for now. |

link not too hard to find Henry , I think that there were different styles of conical helmet and some were more "bulbous" than others Here is a picture that shows various types link

Perhaps they are intended to represent Swedish Rus that would have been under Eastern influences and thus more conical helmets? The fur hats do seem to be typical of the Rus but perhaps of other Vikings as well? |

It's the relative LACK of conicality (not a word?… just call me the Shakespeare of our day) of the Victrix helmets that's the problem, Glengarry5. They remind me of those 15th century Ottoman spahi helmets that were designed to be worn over a turban. |

"Dave, Dave, what are you doin'? All the other smiths have produced lovely conical helmets exactly as per spec. Why do you have to be different and send us these weird bulbous things? Sorry mate, can't accept 'em. I'm goin' to have to send 'em back…." |

There are a lots of different helmet shapes in the sets, conical, round, domed, riveted, none riveted. Just using one source of reference is not a good idea. They used all sorts of native made helmets and lots of captured pieces as well. These were all taken from images of reproductions and helmets from the time still existing in museums and collections. We have not made any as slope sided as the images in the links but plenty of other shapes existed other than those two. Steve. |

Ummm…. the presence or absence of rivets is unrelated to shape, Steve. All I can say is that every helmet shown in the images of the Victrix Vikings that has appeared online so far conforms to the tall, slightly bulbous pattern, suggesting that this is the sculptor's concept of the standard early medieval north European conical helmet, however, I look forward to seeing some that are shaped more akin to the genuine article revealed by archaeology, as depicted above. |
