It was a Battle of the Bulge book. A WW2 vet was retracing his rearguard action after the war with his girlfriend. I read it in the mid 70's…it may have been older.

For the life of me I can't remember the title and it's driving me crazy.

OMG, I remember that book! At one point he leaves her in the car while he goes to wander around some site he's found. When he leaves, he gives her some cigarettes and says: "waiting is hell without tobacco".

Its funny what sticks in a 10 year old's mind…

I think it might have been Panzer! by Harold Calin, at least this cover rings a very strong bell with me.

That's it…this is the cover of the book I read(my mother got it for me when I was sick as a child).
