And quite a long list it is, too!
Is it complete? I hesitate to say so. Some minor unit in a very minor novel may have not been included. But it's a fine list.

The most obvious omission is the South Essex (Sharpes Regiment).

The Corps of Halberdiers (Evelyn Waugh Sword of Honour trilogy). Not very minor novels.

Winston Smith22 Sep 2018 1:25 a.m. PST

The South Essex are there. I found them.

Got to love the 3rd Foot and Mouth 🤣

I can find various Wessex and South regiments, but no South Essex.

Perhaps it is impending senility.

The Blankshires often appear in training manuals as a normal infantry regiment, not Highland.

Dicymick22 Sep 2018 3:20 a.m. PST

South Essex, next one after Royal Westmoreland Fusiliers.

People keep messing with that one. I worked on it a couple of years ago, and when I checked again early this month, some I knew had been there had been removed.

4DJones22 Sep 2018 4:29 a.m. PST

@ robert: that's due to defence cuts.

Florida Tory22 Sep 2018 4:58 a.m. PST

4DJones for the win!

mjkerner22 Sep 2018 6:51 a.m. PST

Great list! Thanks for posting it, John.

You know, 4DJones, that was one I'd forgotten! Someone actually did a piece about the Blankshires and Loamshires being consolidated into the Amalgamees.

Barsethird Regiment from Angela Thirkill.

Not in a work of fiction, but my favorite proposed by a punter during amalgamations back in the '80s or 90s was the Queens Own Green Wellies!

Thanks! Great list

The amalgamated regiment should be The Prince of Wales Own Green Wellingtons. It is made up of 3 Yorkshire based regiments, The Prince of Wales Own Regiment of Yorkshire, The Green Howards and The Duke of Wellington's Regiment. I named my forces deployed to Iraq after it.

I don't see Higgins' outfit from Magnum PI
Prince of Wales something or other

bsrlee22 Sep 2018 9:59 p.m. PST

There was a 'regiment' 13th Lurkers and Crouchers in one episode of the Goons Show, but I can't remember which one.

Winston Smith23 Sep 2018 8:32 a.m. PST

Higgins served with a real regiment. The West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales Own).

Later amalgamated into the Prince of Wales Green Wellies.

Did not know that
Thanks Winston
