"After a long day of pulling guard duty, repairing vehicles and equipment or advising Afghan leaders in the Uruzgan Province, the Soldiers of Tarin Kowt look forward to eating a full-course hot meal for dinner every day.

The base, which NATO Special Operations Forces formally used, was cleared and secured earlier this year by Soldiers of the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment to assist and support the 1st Security Force Assistance Brigade with their advisory missions.

The residents of the newly established base, unlike most service members throughout southern Afghanistan, have their meals prepared in a mobile kitchen trailer by the culinary specialists of Company J, 1st Battalion, 41st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry División…."

While on active duty, '79-'90. Each Mech and Tank Bn had 6 MKTs, IIRC. old fart We got hot chow most times twice a day. The Cooks are part of HHC. Of course sometimes the "hot" chow was not so "hot". But was better than Cs or later MREs … again most of the time. evil grin

When I was an LT in the 101, '80-'83. We may have gotten 1 "Hot" and 1-2 C-Rats. That was before the MRE. We did sometimes when deployed/on ops, etc., for a week or so got nothing but Cs. huh? frown

C-Rats were very high in calories, @ 2000-3000 ! Even in the field 1 was enough calories for a day. Unless you were climbing mountains in the dead of winter ! snowflake huh?

We had a complete breakdown in the food department in 1991. Prior to entering Kuwait we were getting one MRE, one hot meal, and breakfast. The breakfast steadily went downhill until one breakfast consisted of a pineapple ring and a mouthful of the juice. The hot meal was always rice and something else; beef, chicken, or more rice.

In combat we ate just MREs.

After the war we raided the chow hall and got away with a case of bread, a two foot long can of Spam, and a large can of mustard. Ate great for two days. The Marine Corps learned a lot from that war.
