Were you ever (even casually) part of a Youth Subculture in your day (or currently?)

In my 50 years I've variously identified myself as or hung with:

-Mod
-Rude Boy
-Skinhead (no…not a racist one)
-Punk
-Early Hip Hop culture.

And yes…ive got the (sometimes) embarrassing pictures to document each phase.

Metalhead and Stoner, even though I didn't do drugs, people will judge a book by its cover.

I was in the Punk/New Wave/Ska scene when I was young, like from my late teens to … well, I never stopped liking the music and I still usually wear my hair very short, and I did go to the Blondie-Devo show a couple of years ago.

My wardrobe has expanded beyond white shirts and skinny black ties (and black shirts and skinny white ties, for that matter).

I was a science-fiction / comics / gaming geek before that was thing. By the time it became a thing, I was just a middle-aged guy with a hobby.

I was an art student punk, ROTC cadet, and a gaming nerd in New Orleans. Too straight for the weird crowd and too weird for the straights.

I'm pretty sure there are some ex-goths ("death rockers" in my day) here that are holding out!

I was part of that strange miasma surrounding punk, post-punk, hardcore, and extreme metal.

This was from middle school in the late 70s until the early 90s.

Now I'm sort of an "otaku" – an old otaku – but I indulge in anime, manga, and following alt-idol groups to distract me.

I always thought that was the youth main culture.

"Sub-culture" sums up a lot of young people--and no few adults.

Me? Wargame geek. Not PRG, please. There was no such thing as fantasy gaming until my college years, and no such thing as D&D before grad school.

Pizzagrenadier18 Sep 2018 7:34 p.m. PST

Uesugi: I love goth music, but never identified or dressed like one (too busy skating). But I definitely liked dating goths (I married one too).

My husband was a SkinHead and belonged to the A-Town Posse.

Early he was Straight Edge. He brags that he saw Minor Threat at WALLYS in south Bethlehem, PA in October of 1981.

Didn't fit in with any of the usual cliques,as described by Edie McClurg in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off".

As a sea cadet at 13, then naval reserve, pretty straight laced.

We had "jocks", "preppies", "New Wavers" and stoners/druggies when I was in high school – all distinct, each with their own place on the quad.

There were musicians or band geeks too – several of whom are at least nationally famous and have made a nice living in their field.
