"After its release, Solo got some well-deserved flak for how it spent a decent amount of its runtime unnecessarily explaining how popular elements of the Star Wars series came to be as opposed to, y'know, writing an engaging story. We learned how Han got the surname "Solo." (He wasn't born with it; he's a loner!). We learned what "parsecs" measure. (Distance, not time!) We learned why the Millennium Falcon's onboard computer was such an asshole to C-3PO that one time. (It houses the mind of an asshole droid!) We even learned where Han got his trademark blaster from, as if that's a thing anyone outside of Wookieepedia's editorial board cares about.

This clumsy approach to retroactively making the canon "make sense" is still continuing thanks to Jon Kasdan -- one of the writers of Solo -- releasing a cornucopia of factoids and notes about the movie on Twitter.

Solo: A Star Wars (so-called) "Story" has got to be the worst SW movie ever made.

Even Ewoks with pointy sticks taking down Stormtroopers and JJB are preferable to that piece of steaming pile of space junk. No wonder it bombed at the box office. It makes the "feminazi" TLJ look like a masterpiece by comparison.

Goodness. Just goes to show how opinions vary. I quite liked it.

I really enjoyed it too and personally like the backstory bits.

FoxtrotPapaRomeo17 Sep 2018 4:46 p.m. PST

Ah, social media/clickbait telling us what we should think. Marvellouss.

I liked Solo better than The Last Stinker. But that is damning with faint praise, so let me try again--I liked it better than Episode VII. Okay, still faint praise. I liked it better than Episode I. Damn, still faint praise. I liked it better than Episode III. Okay, I'm feeling kind of backed into a corner, here. I think it was about equal to Episode II? Hey, that's the best I can do. I thought Rogue One, on the other hand, was the equal of The Empire Strikes Back, which was definitely the best of the series to date.

In my (always) humble opinion, of course.

Cue the obligatory "this movie robbed me of my childhood!" braying.

Knight of St John17 Sep 2018 6:44 p.m. PST

I also enjoyed it.

Me too, worth the price of admission!

But then, I don't have any barrows to push, I just want a couple of hours diversion from the mundane.

Nick Bowler17 Sep 2018 10:59 p.m. PST

I liked it. Better than the last 5 main canon movies.

"Solo: A Star Wars (so-called) "Story" has got to be the worst SW movie ever made".

Haven't seen the last one, but "The Force Awakens" was worse than Solo, in my opinion.

Judgment on "The Last Jedi" (is it?) will have to wait until I see it for free on TV, since I tire of spending good money on abysmal quality stories from Disney.

The post episode VI movies make even the abysmal prequels look good, by comparison, which is quite a feat, since they were horrible too.

I also enjoyed it. Entertaining caper movie. Then again I enjoyed the Force Awakens and Last Jedi. I don't understand the virulent hatred of them and the claims of social engineering made by the haters. I'm not even sure that many of the critics have even watched the movies based on the posts made on this page by people before Solo was even released. They are only movies.

WarWizard18 Sep 2018 7:24 a.m. PST

I enjoyed the SOLO film, but did not think it was one of the best. I can't remember any of the back story bits mentioned in the first post though, maybe I dozed off during those moments.

Way better a movie than the prequels or the current trilogy.

Patrick Sexton Supporting Member of TMP18 Sep 2018 10:38 a.m. PST

Solo was better than the three prequels and more entertaining than the last two main movies. And any part of Return that contains those miserable little furry effs.

Rogue One is up there with Star Wars and Empire.

Patrick R18 Sep 2018 3:06 p.m. PST

Solo was the answer to a question nobody asked.

Thresher0118 Sep 2018 6:59 p.m. PST

I agree, Rogue One is right up there with the first trio of movies – Episodes 4 = 6.

Not as good as SW, but close to Empire, and perhaps better than the final one.

I find the debate about Star Wars to be amongst the liveliest I have ever seen for a children's movie franchise.

I find the debate about Star Wars to be amongst the liveliest I have ever seen for a children's movie franchise.

My point precisely in this thread: TMP link

Kids loved the new Star Wars, even TLJ.

The people with the most issues with Disney SW are the adults who grew up on the original trilogy and who found to their dismay that, decades later, SW just isn't as magical as it used to be when they were kids, when their innocent eyes were filled with so much wonder. That's why they speak so fondly of the original trilogy with nostalgia, even though rewatching it today would bore one to tears.

Now they dissect SW and endlessly nitpick through their critical adult eyes because they no longer are capable of enjoying SW like they did a long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

Lucas is right in one thing. SW has always been "for the kids."

Chill, dudes. It's just a movie. If we're still 12-year olds we wouldn't be having this discussion. We'd probably be describing TLJ as "cool!" and "awesome!"

Thomas Thomas20 Sep 2018 8:28 a.m. PST

Star War is for people who have retained a sense of wonder and gee whiz enthusiasm for life since childhood. It is not for cynics, know it alls or pendantics.

That said Solo was far superior to Last Jedi (but of course what isn't) and most elements of the prequels. Not quite as good as the original trilogy and inferior to Rogue One, the best of the Disney driven era.

And to be clear Last Jedi's problems have nothing to do with alleged "femnazi" claims (boys your just going to have to suck it up and deal with women having a larger role in modern and esp future life). Bad plotting, slummy costumes, whiny performances and dull characters of all sexes doomed the effort (also apparently undoing the work of three better movies much as Aliens 3 did makes it all but unwatchable – only SW movie I haven't seen twice).

Solo was an excellent movie. Younger Lando was perfect. My quibble was the marauders being the nacent rebellion. Too pat. Better if just a riaval gang.

Patrick Sexton Supporting Member of TMP24 Sep 2018 2:10 p.m. PST

My quibble was the marauders being the nascent rebellion.

I agree, that seemed too 'wrapped up in little bow'. And it just did not ring true.

Earl of the North25 Sep 2018 3:49 p.m. PST

Well I finally watched it……and its an above average movie for me, there are things I disliked about it. Such as killing of two out of three of the outlaw crew Solo joins, am I supposed to care about these people I just met?

But for me its proof again that disney can make a decent Star Wars movie, both civil war era ones for me are enjoyable movies.

I am however pulling a blank on what the whole SJW thing was about surrounding it.
