On a scale of 0 (I don't speak French) to 10 (I'm a native speaker), how well do you speak French?

14Bore15 Sep 2018 12:05 p.m. PST

Non existent, but wish my Russian was better

ZULUPAUL Supporting Member of TMP15 Sep 2018 12:07 p.m. PST

0 & no interest in learning it either.

clibinarium15 Sep 2018 12:10 p.m. PST

Maybe 6.

Winston Smith15 Sep 2018 12:10 p.m. PST

Took it for 3 years in school many years ago.
Never used it since.
Let's be charitable and give me a 2.

cosmicbank15 Sep 2018 12:12 p.m. PST

Good enough to make me think it's better than it actually is.

2 to 3 – I can get a train ticket, a beer, something to eat.

I can tell someone I have a yellow bicycle (although I do not have a yellow bicycle!).

I can't discuss the latest film I saw or book I read in a meaningful way.

I'll be learning it for my trip to France in June.

Speaking to the natives – about a 2. Translating from Text, nearer a 4 if on military matters and access to a dictionary.

Even with this I managed to show a group of French ladies (non Parisians) how to use the ticket machine on the Metro !!!

1.

A year of French class in college, at 8 AM, in a room with a heavy, droning air conditioner unit and a man standing in front of the class, speaking in a language I did not know. So I am of course very adept at snoring in French.

(Okay, I understood enough (and remained awake enough) to parse what he obviously thought were humorous stories of his days living in France, but which weren't at all humorous. But maybe the laugh was lost in the translation in my brain.)

One of my playing chums is French so getting translations is easy. Help with pronunciation is OK too.

I can always make myself understood, but butcher the language pretty badly with a good accent.

I'll give myself a 3.

2, but my wife is a French Teacher and some of it has rubbed off.

TMPWargamerabbit15 Sep 2018 7:50 p.m. PST

Say a 4 I guess. Can read and some ability for writing but my tongue has trouble with speaking. Took college French for three classes many years ago.

Grelber15 Sep 2018 7:56 p.m. PST

Two years in high school (the second because a cute girl was going to be in the class) and a semester in college. I try to use it mentally, and I ate lunch with an American lady and two French ladies in Mycenae, and we Americans spoke French while the French ladies spoke English (the American lady was a teacher, and this was supposed to be a learning experience). Since college, I've picked up some military French and a few other odd words.

I'd say 2-3, I can read a bit but can't really speak in a conversation.

Probably 6 or 7. My accent is good enough to be mistaken for French until I run out of vocabulary. That happens faster as I get older!

Old Contemptibles15 Sep 2018 9:16 p.m. PST

Took it in college and my French is terrible. It was either a foreign language or math.

Personal logo Saber6 Supporting Member of TMP Fezian15 Sep 2018 9:23 p.m. PST

0.5 I can puzzle out written French by context, can't say that I speak any

Patrick R16 Sep 2018 1:17 a.m. PST

Being my first language seems to have helped most of my life.

Vigilant16 Sep 2018 4:26 a.m. PST

Spoken about a 3 or 4. Reading perhaps 1 or 2 better. Managed to get by last time I was in France 4 years ago. My German is much better even though I studied it for a shorter period. I can read Dutch but not speak it. Wish I could speak and read Spanish, but I'm probably too old to learn now.

6-ish.

Decent reading knowledge and can follow movies pretty well with glances at the subtitles as needed. Vocabulary is rusty and doesn't pop to mind quickly enough for decent conversation.

Frederick Supporting Member of TMP16 Sep 2018 11:44 a.m. PST

6-ish as well in the spoken form. I can speak enough to buy things, order food and get directions

I read it much better – well enough that that Canadian government sends me French research grants to evaluate

khanscom16 Sep 2018 4:39 p.m. PST

Maybe a 3-- good enough to read my original Funckens and a little more with a good dictionary.

Dagwood17 Sep 2018 12:10 p.m. PST

Sounds like I'm a three. I could read well enough to follow the text in a Greek archaeological museum where there were no English descriptions. On the other hand I'm a bit deaf, and I have recurring conversations which go along the lines of

Me: Parlez-vous Anglais ?
OP: Non, je ne parle pas Anglais
Me: Ou puis-je trouve un …. er….
OP: OK, perhaps we try it in English ….
