You don't have to give three commands per turn. If you say 'advance twice' they would do that and stop. Or a steady advance of 1 per turn to make sure everyone keeps up. If you roll more actions, they just do nothing with the remainder.
That troops advanced and came short could happen at any time. The advantage is that within close range you have the option (IIRC) of one action without rolling, or roll if you need more.

Hi, interesting comments. I think we thought it was one, two or three moves/actions rather than being able to 'discard' parts of the move. Will try this out. Many thanks

I like the peasants. Actions are are "up to" X amount.
